Our Approach

We began by taking confidence off the table as an assumption. Instead, we used the first phase of the engagement to properly diagnose what was actually going on: where was this person performing well? Where were they pulling back? And were those two things actually connected?

Over four months, working one-on-one, what emerged was a reframe. Confidence wasn’t the core issue. The real constraint was in how the individual was directing their energy, focusing on areas where they had limited influence rather than on the domains where they had real, direct control to create impact.

Once that shifted, the work became about clarity: understanding where genuine authority lived, developing a sharper instinct for what to prioritise, and building the kind of executive presence that comes from being genuinely grounded rather than from performing confidence.

The coaching drew on diverse industry experience, both The Strategic Step team’s operational history and the patterns we’ve observed across leaders in high-stakes environments. We’re not applying a standardised framework. We brought genuine context to a specific person’s situation.


Outcomes

The results exceeded the expectations we had set at the outset of the engagement.

The individual moved into expanded responsibilities, developed a noticeably clearer sense of strategic direction, and reported a significant shift in how they were showing up in their organisation. The progress wasn’t incremental — it was exponential, in the sense that each change they made seemed to unlock further changes.

More broadly, they left the engagement with a set of tools and a way of thinking about their career that will continue to compound over time. That’s the aim: not a short-term performance fix, but a lasting shift in how someone understands their own impact.

Background

This engagement began with a referral from our Amplify Program, a leadership development program for HSW professionals. One of our participants reached out after the program, inspired by the experience and wanting to take the work further through individual coaching.
